Our life looked like passing ships. My husband’s a fireman, so his schedule was wild — sometimes gone for a month at a time.

There were days (okay, weeks) when I felt like a one-woman circus act, just trying to keep the house standing and everyone alive.

Eventually, the pressure — and everything that came with it — led to a separation.

Suddenly, everything felt like it was on the line.

And right around the same time, our son was diagnosed with autism — which reshaped how we structured our time, our energy, and our priorities.

The thought of doing life like that for the next 40 years made me sick to my stomach.
